Sales and customer settings: orders, cart, returns, registration
The Sales settings page controls checkout and everything after it - order rules, the shopping cart and wishlist, merchandise returns and loyalty points. The Customer settings page controls who can register and how, which fields the registration and address forms ask for, and password security. Together they decide how smooth - or how strict - buying in your store is.
Where to find it
Settings → Sales has the tabs Order settings, Merchandise returns, Shopping cart settings and Loyalty points. Settings → Customer has the tabs Customer, Security, Customer form fields and Address form fields.

Order settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Anonymous checkout allowed | Guests can check out without creating an account. Off forces registration or login at checkout. |
| Is re-order allowed | Shows a "Re-order" button on the customer's order details. |
| Terms of service (shopping cart page) / (confirm order page) | Requires ticking a terms of service checkbox before continuing. The linked text is a page. |
| Allow customer to add order note | Customers can add notes to their order from the account area. |
| Allow to cancel orders by users | Customers can cancel their own unpaid orders. |
| Complete order when delivered | Moves the order to Complete automatically when all shipments are delivered. |
| Min order sub-total amount, Min order total amount | Checkout is blocked below these amounts (in the primary store currency). The same limits can be set per customer group. |
| Minimum order placement interval | Seconds a customer must wait between two orders - a simple guard against double orders. |
| Length code | Length of the order code shown to customers alongside the order number. |
| Attach PDF invoice ("order placed" / "order paid" / "order completed" email) | Adds the PDF invoice to those customer emails. |
| Gift voucher activation order status | At which order status purchased gift vouchers become usable. |
Merchandise returns
Enable Returns System lets customers request a merchandise return from their order history. Number of days that the merchandise return is available limits requests to that many days after the order (0 means no limit). Options allow the customer to give a pickup address and pickup date. The tab also manages the lists of return reasons and return actions (e.g. "Wrong size" / "Replacement") the customer chooses from. Handling returns is described in Sales.
Shopping cart settings

| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Display cart after adding product | Takes the customer to the cart instead of staying on the product page. |
| Maximum shopping cart items, Maximum wishlist items | Upper limits on distinct items. |
| Show discount box in shopping cart, Show gift voucher box in shopping cart | Where coupon codes and gift voucher codes are entered. Hide them if you do not use codes. |
| Number of 'Cross-Sells' | How many cross-sell products the cart suggests. |
| Show mini-shopping cart | The cart flyout in the header. |
| Carts shared between stores | On multi-store installations, one cart follows the customer across stores. |
| Allow on hold cart | Customers can put items on hold and check out only part of the cart. |
| Round prices, Group tier prices | Price presentation in cart and on product pages. |
Loyalty points
Enabled switches the program on. Exchange rate is the value of one point in the primary currency; Points for purchases awards points per amount spent once an order reaches the Awarded order status; Points for account registration gives a welcome bonus; Minimum loyalty points to use sets a threshold for redeeming. Points are canceled when the order status is canceled takes points back. See Marketing for the program itself.
Customer settings

| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Registration method | Standard (account active immediately), Email validation (active after clicking the link in the welcome email), Admin approval (active after an administrator approves it) or Disabled (no new registrations). |
| Customer name format | How customers are named in the storefront and emails (email, username, full name, first name). |
| 'Usernames' enabled | Customers log in with a username instead of their email. |
| Allow users to change email, Allow users to delete account, Allow users to export account | Self-service account options, including GDPR export and deletion. |
| Notify about new customer registration | Emails the store owner for every new account. |
| New customer has a free shipping for the first order | A simple welcome incentive. |
| Hide '…' tab switches | Remove sections from the customer's account area you do not use (downloadable products, auctions, courses, documents, reviews, subaccounts). |
| Online Customers minutes, Online Shopping Carts minutes | How long a visitor counts as online in the admin reports. |
Security tab
Password rules: Regular Expression for password validation, Unduplicated passwords number (how many previous passwords cannot be reused), Password lifetime (days before a forced change), Maximum login failures and Lockout time (login failures), Password recovery link. Days valid, and Two factor authentication enabled with its Two factor authentication type (authenticator app, email code or SMS code).
Customer form fields and Address form fields
Each field of the registration form (gender, date of birth, company, street address, city, country, phone…) and of the address form has an enabled and a required switch. 'Accept privacy policy' enabled adds a consent checkbox to registration. Enable 'Country' enabled and 'State/province' enabled when you use tax or shipping by country, because those calculations need the country in the address.
Tips and common mistakes
- With Admin approval, new customers cannot log in until you activate them under Customers → Customers. Tell them so on the registration result page (translation resource).
- Minimum order amounts are compared in the primary store currency, not the currency the customer is browsing in.
- Test checkout as a guest after changing Anonymous checkout allowed - it is the setting most often switched off by accident.
